Ride Don't Hide Anywhere
Ride Don’t Hide 2020 is charting a new path. Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic and the physical distancing measures in place to control the spread of the virus, our in-person Ride Don’t Hide events are going virtual.
From now until the end of June, we’re asking you to Ride Don’t Hide, Virtually. Get involved by riding outside, riding inside, or riding in spirit to bring mental health into the open, wherever you are. Ride Don’t Hide, Virtually shows the world that we don’t have to stand side by side to stand together for mental health.
Even in isolation, no one rides alone.
YOUR RIDE, YOUR WAY
Ride Don’t Hide, Virtually is your ride, your way. Ride outside, ride inside, or ride in spirit to bring mental health into the open, wherever you are.
SO WHAT IS A VIRTUAL RIDE, ANYWAY?
A virtual ride is a choose-your-own adventure. You decide how—and how much—to get involved.
Whether you choose to Ride Outside for a 100 km throughout June or simply go out for a “leisurely” Sunday ride.
Whether you commit to a rigorous 30 day spin challenge or casually pedal on a stationary bike through your next Netflix binge.
Whether you replicate your favourite cross fit regimen in your basement, do yoga once a week in the living room, take a brisk walk every morning before working from home or start a new mindfulness practice in the 10 minutes between home-schooling and starting dinner.
However you take care of yourself this spring – that’s your Ride.
And sharing it with others – that’s your ‘Don’t Hide.’
Here’s how it works…
1. Register here to Ride Outside, Ride Inside, or Ride In Spirit.
2. Then, raise funds and bring mental health into the open, wherever you are.
3. Set a goal to challenge yourself – announce it on your personal fundraising page. Your goal could be to:
- Ride 100 km in June
- Spin or stationary bike for 50 km or 500 minutes
- Walk, run, hike 20 km or 100 minutes
- Move, dance, do yoga or meditate every day in June
- Or whatever you do to take care of your own mental health.
OR set a fundraising goal. Ask for:
- $10 for every km or minute of cycling or spinning
- $25 for each day of of a 30 day challenge
- $500 to help provide one hour of virtual counselling
- $1,000 to help create online resources to help Canadians cope
4. Then, spread the word. You can use the tools in your Fundraising Dashboard or in our online Rider Centre.
5. Track your progress on your fundraising page with regular updates, or livestream a ride or a challenge.
6. Finally, connect. Ride Don’t Hide will be bringing you stories, training tips, wellness info and more, all online. Participate from your phone while on a ride or a jog, from your living room, backyard or wherever. Because we don't have to be together to be a movement for mental health.
Here's how to join:
STEP 1: Register using the "REGISTER NOW" button above. Then, create your personal profile page and choose if you want to start or join a team. Select how you want to participate (Ride Outside, Ride Inside, Ride in Spirit). Additionally, you will be asked if you want to donate. Select 'no thanks' if you do not wish to donate currently. Any of these options will allow supporters to donate to your personal page or to your team page. NOTE: your personal fundraising goal does not have to match your Team's fundraising goal.
STEP 2: Set your own goals to work towards for the month of June (you can start now if you wish!). No bike? No problem. Ride Don't Hide, Virtually is about doing whatever moves you and setting the mental or physical goals you want to achieve. Here are some examples:
Get outside and feel the wind on your face. Cycling and fresh air are good for anyone’s mental and physical health. Ride—or run, walk, hike, you name it—anytime, anywhere, as long or as little as you like, just be sure to follow the recommendations from public health authorities, which may change on a day-to-day basis.
Spin and sweat it out on a stationary cycle or find other ways to move your body indoors. Spin, run on the treadmill, run the stairs. Set your goal and work towards it daily.
Ride in Spirit
No bike? No problem! You can Ride in Spirit by practicing yoga, meditating, dancing, journaling, baking, knitting, reading... Set a mental or physical health goal and work towards it every day.
PROTIP: You can live-stream your activity or share uploaded YouTube videos on your personal and Team page!
STEP 3: Choose to raise awareness, raise critical funds, or both! You can help simply by sharing this virtual event and raising awareness about mental health and CMHA. Anyone can sponsor you by donating to your personal page, or to the team page. The funds you raise here go to CMHA, a charity organization that works to provide mental health services in your community.
What is RIDE DON’T HIDE, VIRTUALLY?
Ride Don’t Hide, Virtually is an online-only peer to peer fundraising initiative. Ride Don’t Hide, Virtually asks riders to sign up online, then spread the word and raise funds for mental health programs and services. Riders are encouraged to ride outside, ride inside, or ride in spirit while taking care of themselves—physically and mentally. Through email, social media and ‘events’ that are livestreamed or broadcast online, Ride Don’t Hide, Virtually aims to facilitate a sense of agency, wellness, connection, contribution, community and belonging.
About the Ride Don’t Hide Movement
Ride Don’t Hide is an annual, nationwide community bike ride that brings mental health into the open while raising essential funds for mental health initiatives. Each year, participants and supporters all across Canada help raise almost $2-million for the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA).
Why should you ride virtually?
In any given year, 1 in 5 Canadians will experience a mental illness. But did you know 5 in 5 Canadians (that’s ALL of us!) have #MentalHealth that needs to be cared for and protected? Ride Don’t Hide is a chance to bring mental health into the open, raise critical funds for vital mental health programs, and connect – to your own mental health, to each other, to our community, and to the national movement for mental health!
Because even in isolation, #nooneridesalone.
